Anyone interested in organization life understands the many ways the term “organiztion culture” is defined and discussed. It can be quite perplexing. Some useful theories and frameworks certainly exist, but knowing how to apply this wisdom in support of positive change is an art, an experiment, and an alchemy of skillful practice.

In my own work I have come to embrace the idea of the art of organization culture. In fact, I firmly believe that art provides a unique opportunity to understand and influence the experience of work. Art provides a channel to connect to people’s intuition and innermost thoughts and feelings and help them express this in ways that don’t emerge from traditional inquiry forms like surveys or open discussion. Art provides a creative mechanism to access this valuable insights that often lie below the surface of an organiztion.

Art can unlock hidden potential in organizations. Art can be leveraged as a catalyst for deeper reflection, an intentionally crafted artifact imbued with organization meaning, a way to see and understand your colleagues more fully, and as a metaphor to inspire action.
